The Lawley

Barry Allen, one of the BWLR group, has built this 7¼ inch gauge 4-4-0 ''Lawley'' locomotive, which had it's first public outing at the Heywood Society event at Rodney Tolhurst's railway in Lenham, Kent on the 15 October 2000.

Here you can see the builder enjoying the fruits of his labour.

The original 2'-0'' gauge locomotives were built in 1895-98 by the Falcon Engine & Car Works, (now Brush), of Loughborough for use on the then newly constructed railway running from Beira in Mozambique to Umtali in what was to become Rhodesia. This was known as the Beira Railway. The locos were given the name Lawley after the railway's Project Manager, Alfred Lawley. Following line re-gauging the Lawleys remained in store until the the first world war after which they were employed on South African narrow guage railways.
